George Dewey Friedel Jr.'s Obituary
George Dewey Friedel, Jr., age 97 of Seaford, DE passed away at home with his family by his side on December 4, 2022. He was born on February 26, 1925, in Seaford, DE, son of the late George Dewey Friedel, Sr. and Hazel (Hitchens) Friedel.
George worked on his father’s farm until he was drafted on April 16, 1945, into the U.S. Army in support of the Army Occupation of Japan where he served 1 year and 8 days overseas. He joined the E.I. DuPont Company in 1952 and was employed there until his retirement 32 years later. In his early years, George enjoyed participating in hunting, shooting guns, throwing horseshoes, and shooting the bow and arrow. He had a fascination for cars and in his later years became an avid fan of Jeff Gordon of NASCAR fame.
His passion after accepting Jesus as his savior was to be a Christian witness everywhere he went. George became an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church on Atlanta Road in Seaford and later he helped establish Christ Evangelistic Church in Laurel, DE where he formed many lasting friendships. George taught Sunday School classes and was a lay speaker. His very favorite activity was to talk about the Bible. George was a great inspiration to us all. He was a loving and devoted husband, dad, and grandfather to his family. Loved by many, George will be greatly missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.
George is preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Ida Mae Sharp Friedel, his beloved son, George Dewey Friedel, III, and his sisters, Doris Saddler, and Laura Venables. He is survived by his daughters: Diane Booth (Philip), and Carolyn Merryman; his loving daughter-in-law, Ronda; his four grandchildren: Jeanne Stewart (Kevin), Jamie Booth (Krista), Kristie Hurley, Eric Merryman, and Isaac Friedel (Diamond); and ten great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM at Christ Evangelistic Church, 9802 Camp Rd., Laurel, DE, 19956. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery, 513 3rd Street, Seaford, DE 19973.
