Louise Smack Allen's Obituary
Louise Smack Allen, 95, passed away Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Transitions LifeCare Hospice in Raleigh, North Carolina. Louise was born on a farm near Pocomoke City, Maryland on December 31, 1922, the youngest of three children to Lola (Ennis) and Harvey Smack. She graduated from Pocomoke City high school and subsequently held various clerical and retail positions. After moving to Salisbury, Maryland, she worked as a jewelry buyer for Benjamin’s department store, relishing the New York City buying trips to make the season’s selections. The love affair with jewelry persisted throughout her life. She enjoyed collecting jewelry and never removed the many special bracelets and rings gifted by her husband.
In the 1940’s, Louise worked at the DuPont Company in Seaford, Delaware, where she met the love of her life, Virgil Allen. They were married on August 31, 1946 and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2016, just two weeks after Virgil’s 100th birthday. Louise was a charter member of the First Baptist Church in Seaford, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She spent most of her life as a home maker, caring for her family and enjoying dear friendships - some which lasted for over 50 years. She never met a stranger; and in her own easy, comfortable way she would reach out and start a conversation with any person standing nearby.
Louise is survived by a loving daughter, Vicki Allen; grandson, Dr. Todd Allen Pepper; nephew, Robert Wayne Bennett; and cousin, Tadd Pruitt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil C. Allen; parents, Lola Ennis Pruitt and Harvey Smack; brother, Joseph Preston Smack; and sister, Dorothy Bennett.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 12, 2018 at Watson-Yates Funeral Home, 609 East King Street, Seaford, DE at 2:00 PM with Reverend Jon Sutton officiating, the family will greet friends beginning at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Seaford.
