Pauline M. Higgins' Obituary
Pauline McCabe Higgins died peacefully March 28, 2019, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford with family by her side. She was 92.
Polly was born December 18, 1926, in Millville, Delaware to Amos and Margurite McCabe. She was the eldest of her beloved sisters, Ruth, Fran, and Hilda. After graduating from Lord Baltimore School in Ocean View, Polly attended the University of Delaware where she earned a degree in elementary education. She moved to Seaford, Delaware and for several years was a first-grade teacher at Seaford Central School.
In 1949, she married Richard C. Higgins of Seaford. A few years later they moved to Newark, Delaware and raised two sons. After Dick retired from DuPont Co., some of Polly’s happiest times were the ones she spent with Dick working on their rustic cabin in the Colorado mountains where they lived for several months each summer. Eventually they returned to Seaford and lived in the Higgins’s family home on Cannon Street.
After Dick’s death, Polly moved to Crossgate Village and was active in the homeowners’ association. She enjoyed traveling and playing bridge with family and friends. Polly spent an equal amount of time at her Bethany Beach cottage where she had many happy summers with her grandchildren and enjoyed visiting with several generations of relatives and friends from near and far.
Most recently, Polly was a resident of Seaford Manor House and was grateful for the kind care she received there. She was an enthusiastic member of the poetry club and enjoyed dining and talking with her many new friends.
Polly was preceded in death by her husband and her eldest son, Stephen McCabe Higgins. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph E. and Karen K. Higgins of Seaford, grandchildren Sarah, Alice (Andrew), Gove and Stuart, and her nieces and nephews and their families. She will be remembered for her graciousness, gentle kind spirit, and love for life, which touched many lives.
A graveside service will be held at 12 PM, Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Stein Highway and Market Streets, Seaford, DE 19973.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Polly’s memory to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
