I was deeply saddened to learn of Ralph's untimely passing, I offer my sincere condolences to his family. I became acquainted with Ralph in the 8th grade as we both attended Selbyville Middle School. He was a gentle, kind, and respectful person. I recall he often brought his chess set into the lunchroom. He played several opponents but rarely lost a game. I didn't understand the rules, but I was fascinated to watch him play. Ralph's dedication to chess got me interested in the game and I soon took it up.
The following year he moved from the Ocean View, DE area (Indian River School District) to Georgetown, DE (Sussex Central School District). I vividly remember that IRHS had a Chess Match against SCHS. Ralph led the Golden Knights and Ken Milutin led the Indians. It was a very intense and competitive match! For the record, the Indians squeaked out a close win against the Golden Knights, 6.5 to 3.5.
After the 9th grade, sadly, we didn't see each other. I was honored to have known him and wish we could have been better friends. What can I say...life happened! On November 1, 2017, I received a Birthday reminder on Facebook for Ralph. I said hi and wished him a Happy Birthday! Afterward, I sent him a friend request and he accepted. I was glad we had the chance to reconnect after such a long time. RIP Ralph...
